2015 14th World Xiangqi Championship
Date: 22nd August 2015
Venue: University of Applied Languages (SDI), Munich, Germany

  1. E3+5  …………

Red uses Elephant Opening.

  1. …………  C8=5

Black counters with Left Central Cannon. As statistic, the most common use opening against Elephant Opening is C8=4 for Cross Palace Cannon opening.

  2. H8+7  H8+7    3. H2+3  …………

From Elephant Opening, Red transform to Screen Horses Defense, which is most effective to against Central Cannon.
If Red played C2=4, planning to transform to Sandwiched Horse variation, this is not so effective as Screen Horse Defense variation.

  3. …………  R9=8    4. R1=2  R8+6

Black R8+7 crosses the river to opponent's pawn rank might not ideal. As seen on board, Black's right flank has not developed yet. A better move would be P3+1 to develop his right flank for a balance formation.

  5. P3+1  R8=7

Black forces to R8=7, could not allowed Red H3+4 else the situation for Black would getting worse.

  6. R2=3  C2+4

Too fast. A better move would be P3+1 to develop his right's flank.

  7. P7+1  C2=3

Bad idea. Normally Black C8=7 if Red was central cannon, and the elephant is not linked. However, as seen, Red's is linked elephant.

  8. P9+1  …………

Excellent move. Now Black need to save his right's cannon.

  8. …………  H2+3    9. R9+3  …………

Black will loses his cannon....

  9. …………  R1=2   10. C8-2  …………

Good move. If Red C8=9, then Black C3=2.

 10. …………  C3+3   11. E5-7  P5+1
 12. C8+3  …………

Excellent move! Starting from here, Red has gained few initiatives.

 12. …………  R7-1   13. E7+5  R7-1
 14. H3+2  H3+5   15. H2+3  …………

Good move.

 15. …………  C5=4

A better choice would be C5-1. This is because attack from center is the only hope for Black.

 16. R3+5  H5+7   17. H3-5  -H+5
 18. H7+6  R2+4   19. H6+7  C4+1
 20. C2+3  …………

Excellent move.

 20. …………  R2-2   21. P7+1  R2=8
 22. P7=6

Black resigns, Red wins.
